Electrician FAQs for Kensington

Below are the questions Kensington homeowners actually ring us about, with the answers you would get over the phone. If yours is not here, call (02) 9134 9029 and ask us straight.

Common questions

Pricing and Quotes

The money questions first, because they are the ones people actually ring about.

Is the quote really free?

Yes. A sparkie comes to you, looks at the job, and prices it at no charge, with no call-out fee for the visit. The written quote is yours to keep and yours to sit on for a week.

What does "$50 off your first service" cover?

A straight $50 off your first service, knocked off the price of the job itself. Nothing to print out, and nothing you need to remember to mention at the door.

Do prices change once you start?

No. The price we quote is the price you pay. If the job runs long, that is our miscalculation to wear, not something that lands on your invoice.

How do quotes work?

A sparkie looks at what is actually there, then writes down one price for the lot: labour, materials, testing, GST. We do not charge by the hour.

Common questions

Licensed, Insured and Done Properly

The boring answers, which are usually the ones that matter when something goes wrong.

What brands do you install?

We fit Clipsal and Hager switchgear, with lighting from SAL or Beacon Lighting. Supply your own fittings if you would rather. The workmanship guarantee covers our labour rather than your gear.

What is a safety switch (RCD) and do I need one?

A safety switch (RCD) watches the current going out and the current coming back. The instant some of it goes missing, say through a person holding a live wire, it cuts the circuit off before that current can do you real harm. The wiring rules now want a safety switch on every circuit, not one lonely unit covering the whole board.

Can I do my own electrical work in NSW?

No. DIY electrical work is illegal in NSW, and that covers the light fitting you were thinking of swapping. A plug top or a globe is about where the line sits.

What is a Certificate of Compliance and do I get one?

It is the paperwork that says the work meets AS/NZS 3000 and was tested before we sign off. Yes, you get one on notifiable electrical work, lodged with NSW Fair Trading, and a copy comes to you by email.

Common questions

Response Times and Booking

Getting hold of us, and what happens once you do.

How do I book?

Ring (02) 9134 9029 and talk it through, or send it through the contact page if it is late and you would rather type. Either way a real person answers the phone, not a queue.

What counts as an electrical emergency?

Burning smells, sparks, scorch marks around a power point, or a board that trips again the second you reset it. If you can smell it or see it, turn it off at the switchboard and ring us. That is what our emergency electrician work is for.

How soon can you fit me in?

Often same or next day on standard bookings, though the morning's diary decides it. A genuine emergency gets someone moving whatever else is on, day or night.

What happens after I call?

We work out what is wrong, book you in for a time that suits, and send a text the afternoon beforehand so it is not a surprise. You get a fixed written price before we start.

Common questions

The Kensington Questions

The local ones, which are mostly about the age of the place.

Why do Kensington's older homes need switchboard upgrades?

Plenty of the older dwellings and converted flats here never got RCD safety switches, because nothing required them when the board first went in. Modern circuits do require them, and that is what drives most of the switchboard upgrades we quote.

What suburbs do you service?

We cover Kensington plus Kingsford, Randwick, Eastlakes, Maroubra, Eastgardens and Coogee. Each one has its own page, or you can ring and ask.

Do you know Kensington's housing stock?

Well enough to guess at the wiring before the board is even open. Three waves built this place: a pre-1940 core of California bungalows and Federation houses, walk-up flats through the 1960s to 1980s, then apartments from the 2000s on.

Do you work on heritage or strata properties?

Both. Homeowners, strata committees and property managers all use us, so a block of units is routine rather than a special case. Period houses just take more patience and fewer shortcuts.
